Our third part in this series on Whey Protein and Aging takes a look at Immune Support and Detoxification.
As we age our immune systems do not function as well as they used to, leaving us susceptible to various germs, bugs and viruses. The reality of this frequently leads to a heavy medication load for many of our elderly population. Along with killing off all the unwanted invaders, we’re also ridding our body of helpful bacteria and good gut-flora, which can create a vicious cycle.
Whey Supports the Immune System!
There are two important components of whey protein that help improve our immune system. The first is called, lactoferrin. It's an iron-binding and iron-modulating protein found in cow's milk and even more abundant in whey protein concentrate. It helps coordinate the body's immune response that protects us from most infections, tumors and cancers. It belongs to a family called cytokines which also boost the activity of T-cells and stimulate production of immunoglobulins. It is our body's first defense, protecting orifices such as the eyes, mouth and nose from bacterial infection.
The second component is immunoglobulins (IgG), which are proteins that are also present in cow's milk. One of their functions is as a transporter of antibodies against harmful microorganisms like viruses, bacteria's and other foreign invaders. IgG has been used to to treat diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hepatitis A, Anemia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Chickenpox, among others.
We also have a ‘master antioxidant’ in our body called glutathione which is present in each and every one of our cells, and does an incredible job of increasing productivity of all other antioxidants, as well as protecting our cells from free radicals. It is able to detoxify the body, aid in cellular repair and slow down the aging process. A high quality whey protein is rich in cysteine and glutamine which are responsible for producing glutathione in our cells. You can find out more about glutathione by clicking here.
Detoxifying from Medication Overload
The common side effects of aging can have many individuals on a heavy regimen of pharmaceutical drugs. One very popular drug and widely used pain reliever has a long history and correlation of causing short-term and long-term liver damage.
In a clinical study reported in a 2006 Journal of the American Medical Association, nearly 40 percent of otherwise healthy adults who took 4,000 mg of acetaminophen for two weeks were found to have liver damage as evidenced by abnormal liver test results. Our elderly population is more likely to be on a regular regimen of pain relievers due to; circulatory problems, arthritis, back pain, digestive disorders and more.
A whey protein supplement is an easy and high quality protein source, providing you with the full range of amino acids and precursors to glutathione production that will help detoxify and flush your body of medications one cell at a time.
